Views on the Dialogue between the NLD and the Military Regime
The DPNS welcomes the political dialogue between the military regime and the National League for Democracy (NLD). The DPNS believes that the dialogue could lead towards national reconciliation; long lasting peace; and democratization. The DPNS acknowledges the fact that we are not a key player at the moment of dialogue, but the DPNS stands firmly as a pressure group in supporting a successful outcome to the dialogue (the DPNS strongly support a successful outcome to the dialogue).
- Dialogue is the only way to settle the current political crisis, but we shall oppose any efforts at dialogue that ignores the interests and benefits of the people.
- Dialogue shall encourage the people agenda for peace and the agenda of voiceless should be addressed.
Views on the National League for Democracy (NLD)
- The DPNS fully supports the NLD led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and its leadership position in the current democratic movement in Burma, and honors the NLD’s landslide victory in the 1990 Election.
- The DPNS recognizes and supports the formation of the Committee Representing for People’s Parliament (CRPP), which was formed according to the mandate of the elected representatives of the people. It has the legitimate right to implement the results of the 1990 Election and the national constitution on behalf of the people’s parliament. The DPNS accepts that no individual has the right to abolish the CRPP; its legitimacy solely rests with the people and only the people can abolish it.
Views on the Political Alliances of the DPNS
The DPNS has worked in partnership with all democratic forces and ethnic nationalities to strengthen the process of democratic struggle and national reconciliation. The DPNS observes that some of the ethnic resistance groups are fighting for their equal rights and some for national sovereignty. The DPNS wishes to resolve the nationalities’ problems by peaceful means – a national reconciliation process based on guarantees of equality and self-determination within a federal union of Burma.
- The current political situation in Burma demands a genuinely united political front based on common political aspirations. All the revolutionary and democratic forces seem united, but they are still weak in coordination and implementation of common goals, policies and political activities.
- The NCUB (National Council of the Union of Burma), the NDF (National Democratic Front), and the DAB (the Democratic Alliances of Burma) are also important opposition forces. They have played their particular roles in the national reconciliation process and in the leadership of the pro-democratic movements.
