Political Education for Workers

The party’s worker affairs committee in partnership with Yaung-Chi-Oo Workers Association (YCOWA) and ABF Västra Götaland from Sweden has organized a series of events for political education for Burmese workers.  On 10-11 April 2011, 18 workers from two garment factories joined  a training at the party worker education centre.  Htut Oo Hlaing, a member of Central Leading Committee led discussion on Burma’s political history and current political situation.

3rd Conference of FDB

The 3rd Conference of Forum for Democracy in Burma (FDB) was successfully held from 4th to 8th April 2011 near the Thai-Burmese border, to which member organizations sent 34 representatives and 4 observers.  At the 5-day conference, the representatives discussed on current political development in Burma, analysis on international community’s responses related to Burma, future scenarios of political development and challenges ahead.  Then, the conference delegation agreed on the adoption of the FDB strategic aim as “toward the emergence of an interim government of transition to democracy through mass movements against 2008 Constitution and the result of 2010 Elections”.  The conference elected 11-member secretariat.  Party General Secretary Ngwe Lin and Central Leading Committee member Toe Toe Tun were elected as Deputy Secretary-General and Information Secretary respectively.

Migrants Movement Consultation in Chiang Mai

Zaw Zaw Htun, the representative of DPNS Worker Affairs Committee joined the two-day event of Migrant Movements Consultation, a gathering of Burmese migrant workers and organizations working for migrant workers in Thailand, which was organized by MAP Foundation in late February 2011 in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

At the Consultation, migrant workers and representatives of organizations met with representatives of the labour movements of Cambodia, India, Malaysia, and Thailand to share experiences of building collective movements to defend workers interests against injustice and exploitation.   Over the course of two days migrant workers, representing workers associations and community based organisations across the country, and the trade unionists, shared information on different aspects of union organising ranging from the background of the labour movement in Thailand and strategies for collective bargaining, to the role of women and politics in trade unionism.

The party’s worker education programme organized a discussion of Burmese migrant workers in Mae Sod on “Women Participation in Collective Movement” on 13 February 2011.

Visit of Swedish MP

Party leaders received a visit of Mrs. Carina Ohlsson, a Swedish Social Democratic MP who is also a member of Swedish Parliament’s European Affairs Committee at the party headquarters office on 14th January 2011.  She is accompanied by Mr. Sören Hansen of ABF Västra Götaland in Sweden.

Discussion on "Women & Health" for Burmese Workers

The party’s worker affairs committee has implemented the political education for Burmese migrant workers in Mae Sod under a joint project together with Yaung-Chi-Oo Workers Association (YCOWA) and ABF Västra Götaland from Sweden.  On 2nd January 2011, as one event of the series of education activities, female Burmese workers were provided a round-table discussion on “Women and Health” at the party worker education centre.  Noe Noe Htet San and Naw Mu Naw from Burmese Women Union (BWU) led the discussion as resource persons.
