DPNS strongly denounces the warning letter to NLD by Home Affairs Ministry

30 June 2011

1. On 28 June 2011 the state-owned newspapers in Burma reported that the Home Affairs Ministry had sent a warning letter to the National League for Democracy (NLD) regarding the functioning of the NLD offices nationwide and their activities, including meetings with diplomats and officials from foreign governments and international organizations.  DPNS strongly denounces both the contents of such a letter and “Thein Sein” Governments’ political purpose in sending it.

2. DPNS recognizes that the NLD, being the one and same  political organization that won a landslide victory at the 1990 Elections has secured support of all the people of Burma; has been recognized and supported by political forces inside the country and in exile as well as by the international communities.  Likewise, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is not merely an ordinary citizen of Burma, but the General Secretary of NLD, the respected leader of all the people of Burma and the domestically and internationally recognized political leader of Burma.

3. DPNS fully acknowledges that the roles of NLD and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi are very much key to the national responses to the current political, social and economic crises of Burma.  Thus, without a doubt, DPNS rejects any attempt to exclude NLD and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi from the process of political change to democracy in Burma.

4. DPNS also views that such a warning letter from the Home Affairs Ministry is a pre-emptive effort to stop Daw Aung San Suu Kyi from leaving Rangoon to visit up country.

5. DPNS seriously appeals to all the people of Burma including political forces inside and in exile and members of international community to be on the alert for attempts of the Burmese regime following this warning letter, and by all means to  support the NLD and its activities and to protect and support Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
