Statement on the 16th Anniversary of Multi-party General Election

May 27, 2006

May 27th marks the  16th anniversary  of the multi-party  general election of Burma held in 1990. The entire people of Burma unanimously stated their desire for democratic change through the election.

However, the ruling military regime, State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) ignored the results of the election. They rejected the winning  party, preventing them from forming a democratic government and they rejected the establishment of the People Parliament.

Moreover, the regime is currently trying to dismantle the National League  for Democracy  (NLD) and other political parties and continues to ignore the results of the election. It intends to crush the will of the people.

The statements issued by the NLD in February and April this year, suggest that the regime should cooperate in the process of national reconciliation and democratic transformation,  in which Daw Aung San Suu Kyi should be allowed to participate. We, the DPNS believe that the approach of the NLD is not only appropriate, but will also avoid utter devastation in the future of Burma.

To settle Burma’s problems peacefully today, it needs the following:

  • recognition of 1990 election results
  • recognition of the elected political parties
  • recognition of the role of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi
  • a process of dialogue

The DPNS  urges the people of Burma and  other concerned groups including ethnic cease-fire and  overseas Burmese organisations to cooperate and  participate with  those elected  political parties, NLD, Shan National League for Democracy and support the Committee Representing People Parliament for the goal of democratic change.

We also urge all patriotic rank and file in the army to cooperate together with the people to achieve democratic change, which could pave the way to peace and national reconciliation for our country.

We also urge the International Community including the United Nations and neighbouring countries to assist with a helping hand for Burma’s democratic change.

Let’s get going together for National Reconciliation.
