The Democratic Party for a New Society (DPNS) humbly salutes the thousands of martyrs who sacrificed their lives, blood and sweat during the 8888 nation-wide people’s movement for Democracy in their mother land. In the opinion of the DPNS it was solely due to this people’s uprising in 1988 that the one party dictatorship the State Law and Order Restoration Council had to hold a multi-party general election. Although, the military clique did not have the will to give up their power according to the wishes of the people, the people had proven that their will is a force to be reckoned with.
The National Unity Party(NUP), transformed from the Burma Socialist Programme Party (BSPP) that had ruled the country for 26 years was overwhelmingly defeated by the party of the people, the National League for Democracy in these 1990 general elections.
Since 1990 until today, the regime has ignored the election result and refused political dialogue with the elected party. Led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the NLD has repeatedly proposed talk processes, even while the regime attempted to silence the opposition and crush the movement of activists and the people by committing systematic human rights violations.
The country is now in crisis due to the willful mismanagement and corrupt policies of the SLORC/SPDC clique. Woefully, the regime ignores the social, public health, education and economic crisis of the country and fails to recognize itself as the root cause of these multiple problems.
The regime has even attempted to propose itself as the solution to the very problems that it has created. It declared a seven point road-map leading straight to military-style “democracy.”During the first step, the regime started a constitution drafting process through a National Convention of hand-picked delegates, excluding elected political parties, elected members of parliament and true representatives of the ethnic nationalities.
The DPNS condemns the undemocratic process of the strictly controlled and severely limited National Convention and is convinced that the country’s problems cannot be addressed through such means. The DPNS believes that meaningful political dialogue must be initiated to start the process of addressing the countries woes. True political dialogue can avoid further bloodshed and suffering of the people. But the people’s power movement will have to continue their struggle in the spirit of the 8888 people’s power movement to ensure that they are a force to lead the country into a multi-party, democratic system.
An end to military dictatorship!
Long live the spirit of the 8888 martyrs!
